Despite its name, degenerative disc disease is not really a disease. It describes the normal ageing of spinal discs, which gradually lose water and become thinner and less flexible.

These changes are very common and often painless. In some people, a worn disc becomes a source of pain or contributes to nerve pressure.

Patients with degenerative disc disease frequently report one or more of the following sensations:

Ongoing low back or neck pain
Pain that worsens with sitting, bending or lifting
Pain that eases with walking or changing position
Occasional flare-ups of more severe pain
Routine Specialist Consultation

Otherwise, see a spine specialist if symptoms last more than a few weeks, keep coming back, or stop you from working, sleeping or walking comfortably.

Phase 1 · First-Line Care

Without surgery

The vast majority of spine conditions begin and resolve with conservative care:

1
Exercise and physiotherapy to strengthen supporting muscles
2
Posture and movement advice
3
Pain-relieving medication during flare-ups
4
Injections in selected cases
Phase 2 · When Needed

When surgery may help

Surgery is only considered when non-surgical measures do not provide relief:

Surgery is uncommon and is considered only when pain is severe and long-lasting despite treatment and a clear source is identified, or when the disc is causing nerve pressure.

Outlook & Rehabilitation

Most people manage well with exercise and activity changes, and flare-ups often settle over days to weeks.

Recovery varies from person to person. Your doctor will guide you on what is right for you.

Does it mean my spine is degenerating badly?

No. The term sounds worse than it is. These changes are part of normal ageing and are found in many people without pain.

Is it inherited?

Genetics plays a part, along with age, smoking, weight and physical demands.
