What it is
As we age, the discs in the neck lose water and height, and the joints develop small bony growths. This is called cervical spondylosis. It is very common, and many people with it have few or no symptoms.
Sometimes the changes press on a nerve (causing arm symptoms) or on the spinal cord (myelopathy), which needs prompt assessment.
Common symptoms
Patients with cervical spondylosis frequently report one or more of the following sensations:
When to see a doctor
See a doctor urgently if you have:
- Clumsy hands, or difficulty with buttons or handwriting
- Problems with balance or walking
- Weakness in the arms or legs that is getting worse
- Loss of control over your bladder or bowels
Otherwise, see a spine specialist if symptoms last more than a few weeks, keep coming back, or stop you from working, sleeping or walking comfortably.
Treatment options
Without surgery
The vast majority of spine conditions begin and resolve with conservative care:
When surgery may help
Surgery is only considered when non-surgical measures do not provide relief:
Surgery is considered when the spinal cord is under pressure, or when arm pain or weakness from nerve pressure continues despite treatment. Options include removing the disc and fusing the level, disc replacement, or decompression from the back of the neck.
Recovery
Most people with cervical spondylosis manage well without surgery. After surgery, many patients go home within a few days.
Recovery varies from person to person. Your doctor will guide you on what is right for you.
Common questions
Is cervical spondylosis just age?
It is largely age-related, and very common. Having it on a scan doesn't always mean it's causing your symptoms.
Can a pillow help?
A pillow that keeps your neck in a neutral position may make you more comfortable, though no pillow cures spondylosis.
Consult Dr Vem Krishna Bhargava Reddy regarding your cervical spondylosis symptoms
